Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of Bangkok's most popular attractions, is renowned among locals and international visitors alike. With over 8,000 stalls across 27 sections, it offers a diverse range of products, including fresh produce, clothing, pets, plants, cooked food, packaged foods, raw ingredients, and miscellaneous goods.
The market was established in 1978 under the leadership of Prime Minister General Kriangsak Chamanan, who repurposed unused land owned by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). This location became the new site for vendors previously operating at Sanam Luang, following the government's decision to transform Sanam Luang into a public park for Bangkok’s bicentennial celebrations. The relocation effort involved reclaiming and leveling the land near Phahonyothin Road. Initially named the Phahonyothin District Market, it was renamed "Chatuchak Market" in 1987 to align with the nearby Chatuchak Park.
Chatuchak Market has its roots in a 1948 policy by then-Prime Minister Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who promoted the establishment of weekend markets across Thailand. Initially hosted at Sanam Luang, Bangkok's weekend market was relocated multiple times before finding its permanent home in Chatuchak.
In 2012, management of the market shifted from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to the SRT, sparking mixed reactions from vendors. However, in December 2018, the SRT returned management control to the BMA, where it remains today.
Today, Chatuchak Market is not just a shopping destination but also a cultural hub, attracting millions of visitors annually and showcasing Bangkok’s vibrant local and international trade.
