On November 6, Surachit Pongsingwittaya, President of the Bangkok City Council, welcomed Indian Ambassador to Thailand Nagesh Singh for a discussion on transforming Bangkok’s Phahurat district into a “Little India.” This initiative aims to strengthen Bangkok’s ties with Mumbai through a Sister City Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and attract tourism, particularly from Indian visitors. Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon and other Bangkok council members were also present at the meeting, where they outlined development plans that integrate Indian cultural elements throughout Phahurat.

The "Little India" project will emphasize authentic Indian cuisine, festivals, traditional markets, and unique architectural designs inspired by Indian culture. Plans include upgrading sidewalks, installing themed street signs, and creating a vibrant setting for Indian cultural celebrations and trade fairs. These developments are intended to create a distinctive tourism experience, reflecting Indian heritage for both local and international visitors.

Bangkok’s City Council also seeks collaboration with local businesses and community stakeholders to promote Phahurat's transformation as a cultural tourism hotspot. Marketing efforts will target both Thai and international audiences, positioning "Little India" as a new landmark in Bangkok’s tourism landscape.

The project aims not only to boost tourist numbers but also to enhance the local economy by creating jobs and income opportunities through cultural events, music, and arts. Surachit emphasized that this initiative aligns with Thailand's "Soft Power" strategy, using cultural appeal to increase investment confidence and provide economic stability for the community.
