On May 18, Mr. Wisut Chainarun, Pheu Thai Party (PT) list MP and chairman of the government coalition coordination committee (government whip), gave an interview regarding Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Phichai Chunhavachira’s recent remarks suggesting a review of the economic stimulus project. He was asked whether this would affect the Pheu Thai Party and the government, since the policy had been a key campaign promise.
He responded that it was indeed a core campaign policy and reaffirmed continuously by the party. However, regarding Mr. Phichai’s comments, no one within the Pheu Thai Party was yet aware of what he meant or how it would be handled, as no internal discussions had taken place. It may have simply been Mr. Phichai's personal opinion.
He noted that parliament is currently in recess, with MPs set to reconvene on May 28 to deliberate the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Bill. That session may clarify various positions within the party. Mr. Wisut acknowledged that he had heard multiple opinions suggesting a policy review and that the party is listening.
When asked if the public would understand should the third phase of the digital wallet project be canceled, Mr. Wisut said the facts need to be clarified first—whether the minister truly made such a statement. He stressed that criticism should be reserved until the full facts are confirmed.
He also confirmed that before the special parliamentary session begins on May 28, Pheu Thai will hold its usual internal meetings. A government whip meeting is scheduled for May 26, followed by a Pheu Thai MPs’ meeting on May 27. Additionally, a joint meeting with the opposition whip is set for May 21 to discuss time allocations for the budget bill debate.
