On January 6, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai provided an update on the release of four Thai crew members detained by Myanmar authorities. He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with military, police, and other relevant agencies, is actively working on the case. While Myanmar has recently released 151 Thai nationals, the four crew members remain in custody due to ongoing legal procedures.
The crew members are currently held in Kawthaung, where family visits have been facilitated to ensure their well-being. Phumtham emphasized that such legal processes are standard for all nations and similar to Thailand’s treatment of foreign detainees. He stressed the importance of allowing the process to unfold without undue interference or public pressure.
When asked if the crew must first serve penalties in Myanmar, Phumtham clarified that this is not the case. Instead, the situation requires completion of legal and diplomatic procedures. Public discussions on the specifics could complicate negotiations, but the government remains committed to resolving the issue through continuous coordination.
Regarding the timeline, Phumtham stated it is unpredictable and depends on Myanmar’s judicial process. "It could conclude tomorrow or next week," he remarked, adding that each case is unique and cannot be generalized. He urged patience and minimal speculation to facilitate smoother negotiations.
