At 7:15 PM on January 3, two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at a police checkpoint on Phetkasem Road in Kok Pho District, Pattani Province. The attackers approached from Na Khet junction, approximately 100 meters from the checkpoint, and fired shots at the back of the bulletproof police station booth. The bullets struck the roof and a radio communication pole, but no injuries or fatalities were reported among the five officers or nearby civilians.

Due to the presence of civilians near the scene, the police were unable to return fire. Investigators later recovered approximately 25-30 shell casings from a 5.56 caliber firearm and seven 9mm shell casings at the site. The attackers fled the scene along the same route.
