On December 31 at 5:00 p.m., independent activists gathered in front of Bangkok Remand Prison to host the “We Will Not Abandon Each Other” event, combining a New Year’s countdown with a show of solidarity for 33 political detainees still in custody. Participants expressed hopes that 2025 would mark their release and that such gatherings outside the prison would no longer be necessary by 2026.
Event Highlights
Political activists, former Red Shirt supporters, and young people steadily joined the event throughout the evening. Among the attendees were prominent activist Ekachai Hongkangwan, known for his cases under Section 112 (lese majeste) and the Computer Crime Act, and "Auntie Pokky," another political figure. The gathering featured shared meals, including dishes like larb, som tam, barbecue, and sweet drinks.
At 6:30 p.m., Natthapong Phukaew, or "Kaew Sai," a singer and guitarist from the band Samanchon, performed to convey messages of solidarity. Independent artist "Nuad Rimthang" also played songs with political themes.
The event included gift exchanges and year-end games, with participants bringing wrapped presents to share. Natthapong remarked that music was his way of expressing care and offering comfort to those still incarcerated.
Message of Hope
Reflecting on the evening, Natthapong said, "Many are still in and out of prison repeatedly. I hope this small gathering brings encouragement to those fighting alongside us. Outside, the weather is chilly; I hope it’s not as cold inside as the loneliness they might feel. Tonight, we sing and embrace to ease that loneliness."
The event underscored continued calls for justice and optimism for a brighter future for political detainees.
