On December 14, 2024, flash floods inundated communities on Koh Tao, located in Koh Phangan district, Surat Thani province, following continuous heavy rainfall since December 13. Torrential water from the island's mountain flowed rapidly downhill, flooding several areas up to 60 centimeters deep before draining into the sea. The floods caused damage to homes, shops, motorcycles, and cars, impacting both local residents and tourists.
Local authorities, including Koh Tao Police, Koh Tao Municipality, and rescue teams, mobilized efforts to evacuate affected residents and tourists to safer locations.
According to Wacharin Fasiriporn, Mayor of Koh Tao Municipality, the situation is manageable, and floodwaters are receding. He assured that if rainfall subsides for 3-4 hours, the remaining water will drain into the sea. The mayor noted that the floods primarily consisted of rainwater flowing from the mountains, with minimal damage to commercial areas.
Travel to Koh Tao remains unaffected, with no suspension of ferry services reported. However, travelers are advised to check schedules and confirm with service providers before embarking.
