On November 8, a heated debate emerged on social media after a ferry operator serving the Donsak–Samui–Phangan route announced a ban on electric vehicles (EVs) aboard its ferries. The company, Raja Ferry Plc., cited safety concerns over the potential fire risk posed by overheating EV batteries.
The ban, effective November 18, 2024, applies exclusively to fully electric vehicles, while hybrid vehicles (combining gasoline and electric power) are still permitted. The company explained that the temporary measure aims to protect passengers' safety and property.
In response, many netizens pointed out that an alternative operator, Seatran Ferry, continues to accommodate EVs. Seatran reportedly manages risks by designating EVs to park at the rear of their newer, cleaner, and safer vessels. EV owners are advised to opt for Seatran services when traveling to Samui or Phangan.
The policy by Raja Ferry has drawn mixed reactions, with some supporting the precautionary stance while others view it as unnecessary and discriminatory against EV owners.
