On June 12, 2025, in its 6th meeting of the year, the Medical Council of Thailand voted—by a margin exceeding two-thirds of attending members—to reaffirm its previous decision from May 8, 2025, to discipline three doctors from the Department of Corrections Hospital and Police General Hospital for their roles in treating former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on the 14th floor of the Police Hospital.
This vote followed an attempted veto by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, who serves as the Special President of the Medical Council. On June 13, documents from the meeting were released, revealing that 69 out of 70 council members were present, with one absent due to overseas travel.
One of the accused doctors, the current Chief Medical Officer of the Police Hospital, was not allowed to participate in the vote, reducing the eligible voters to 68. Each doctor’s case was voted on individually:
- Female Doctor from Corrections Hospital – Reprimanded. Result: 67 in favor of upholding the decision, 0 in favor of the veto, 1 abstention.
- Former Chief Medical Officer of the Police Hospital – 3-month license suspension. Result: 64 in favor of upholding the decision, 2 in favor of the veto, 2 abstentions.
- Current Chief Medical Officer of the Police Hospital – 6-month license suspension. Result: 65 in favor of upholding the decision, 1 in favor of the veto, 2 abstentions.
The abstentions were mostly from ex officio government doctors, while the one vote supporting the veto came from an elected council member.
Next steps include the official issuance of orders based on the reaffirmed resolutions. As of June 13, the Medical Council's legal division is reviewing the documentation before sending it to all relevant parties. The specific timeline for these actions has yet to be determined.
