In Nakhon Ratchasima, the onset of cold weather has raised concerns about respiratory illnesses, particularly pneumonia, which spreads easily in crowded settings like schools, dormitories, military camps, and hospitals. Dr. Taweechai Wisnuyothin, Director of Disease Control Office 9, warned that the winter season could lead to an increase in cases of pneumonia, influenza, and COVID-19. These illnesses are transmitted through respiratory droplets when infected individuals cough or sneeze. Symptoms include fever, coughing, fatigue, sore throat, and in severe cases, complications such as myocarditis, encephalitis, or severe pneumonia.
From January 1 to December 12, 2024, the health district reported 33,161 pneumonia cases with 26 deaths. By province:
- Nakhon Ratchasima: 11,648 cases, 3 deaths.
- Buriram: 10,302 cases, no deaths.
- Surin: 7,841 cases, 23 deaths.
- Chaiyaphum: 3,825 cases, no deaths.
The most affected age groups are children aged 1-3 years.
Dr. Taweechai urged the public to follow preventative measures, including frequent handwashing, avoiding touching the face, wearing masks in crowded areas, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. He emphasized cleaning shared items like children’s toys and seeking immediate medical care if severe symptoms, such as shortness of breath, arise.
