In the early hours of December 14, a bomb exploded near the main stage of a retro-style dance event at the "Land of the Sky Red Cross Fair" in Umphang District, Tak Province. Police and emergency responders arrived to find chaos, with locals and officials assisting the injured—men, women, and children—totaling 48 people. Tragically, two individuals, including a 14-year-old boy, died at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries at Umphang Hospital. The rescue operation faced significant challenges due to a lack of ambulances, forcing the use of personal vehicles and three-wheelers to transport the injured.
The blast, caused by a powerful improvised explosive device typically used in warfare, scattered debris across the area, leaving chairs, beer cans, and other items strewn around the venue. The injured sustained a range of wounds, from minor to critical. Investigators believe the perpetrator is highly skilled and not an ordinary individual. Local police, led by the Umphang Police Station, are gathering evidence and questioning witnesses and survivors.
Tak Provincial Police Commander Maj. Gen. Samrit Aemkamol has taken charge of the investigation and deployed additional officers from Mae Sot Police Station to assist in resolving the case. Authorities remain confident that the culprit will be apprehended. Meanwhile, images of the rescue efforts and the aftermath have been widely circulated on social media by Umphang residents, drawing national attention to the tragedy.
