On December 1, Phakamon Nunanun, a party-list MP and deputy spokesperson for the People’s Party, criticized Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's response to questions about her handling of severe flooding in southern Thailand. The PM had remarked that her marriage to a southerner was proof she cared about the southern region.
Phakamon, posting on Facebook, called the PM’s statement inadequate and questioned its relevance to the pressing crisis. She noted the severe impact of the floods, which have left major routes in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla inaccessible for four days, with affected residents urgently needing food, medicine, and drinking water.
She contrasted the Thai government’s response with Malaysia’s more efficient handling of a similar historic flood. Malaysia prepared temporary relief centers (PPS) in advance, accommodating up to 100,000 evacuees in Kelantan, a state bordering Thailand's Narathiwat province.
Phakamon further criticized the lack of a national crisis management command led by the prime minister, despite the widespread nature of the disaster. She argued that effective leadership and systematic problem-solving, rather than personal anecdotes, demonstrate true care for citizens.
