On June 15, Ambassador Prasas Prasatvinitchai, head of the Thai side of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), and Mr. Lam Chea, Cambodian Minister for Border Affairs and head of Cambodia’s National Border Affairs Secretariat, co-chaired the closing ceremony of the 6th Thai-Cambodian JBC meeting in Phnom Penh. The two parties signed a joint meeting memorandum.
The discussions were smooth and friendly, with both sides expressing gratitude for the meeting’s success. They emphasized the importance and effectiveness of the JBC as the key bilateral mechanism for border negotiations. This session marked a significant step forward in demarcating the Thai-Cambodian border, which spans approximately 800 kilometers, and contributed to easing tensions along the border. Both sides acknowledged there is still work to be done and agreed to continue cooperation. Thailand will host the next special JBC meeting in September.
Currently, Thailand and Cambodia engage in three main levels of border cooperation:
- JBC – the primary bilateral mechanism for technical and legal border negotiations.
- General Border Committee (GBC) – a high-level security mechanism co-chaired by the defense ministers of both countries, tasked with fostering cooperation and maintaining order along the border.
- Regional Border Committee (RBC) – a military-level bilateral mechanism, co-chaired by regional military commanders, for local-level discussions on border management, development, and problem-solving.
