On January 8, MP Parit Wacharasindhu, a list MP and spokesperson for the People's Party, expressed his concerns on Facebook regarding the delay in deliberating the constitutional amendment bill related to the establishment of a Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA). Originally scheduled for January 14-15, the debate has been postponed by one month to February 13-14 following a decision by the parliamentary whip committees.
The Senate Whip proposed the delay for two main reasons:
- The Pheu Thai Party plans to submit its own constitutional amendment bill on January 8, requiring more time for the Senate to review it.
- The Senate is uncertain whether additional bills, including one potentially from the Cabinet, will be introduced, necessitating a longer postponement.
Parit questioned the necessity of the delay but emphasized the importance of the Cabinet providing a clear stance on whether and when it will propose its own constitutional amendment. He argued that this clarity is critical for ensuring that the February session proceeds as scheduled, fulfilling the government’s commitment to drafting a new constitution—a promise made by the Pheu Thai-led government to Parliament and the public.
