On December 24, Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district continued to experience severe cold weather, with the morning bringing clear skies and excellent air quality. At the Kew Mae Pan viewpoint, temperatures dropped to 4°C, attracting numerous warmly dressed visitors eager to witness the first light of dawn.
The mountaintop saw frost (known locally as Maei Khaab), formed as temperatures at the grass level plummeted to -2.3°C, while the peak recorded 6°C. This marks the third occurrence of frost this winter season, delighting tourists who eagerly captured photos of the rare phenomenon. The frost crystals, resembling miniature snowflakes, sparkled like glass under the sunlight, creating a magical scene for visitors unaccustomed to such cold weather in Thailand’s tropical climate.
In camping and lodging areas surrounded by pine trees, temperatures were slightly warmer, with lows of 8°C. The mountain is seeing an increase in visitors, with over 9,000 tourists during weekends and 3,000–5,000 on weekdays.
Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai city, the lowest temperature was 15°C. Tourism activity has surged, resulting in heavier traffic as more travelers arrive to enjoy the cool weather, which is expected to persist.
