On December 7, 2024, updates emerged regarding the detention of four Thai fishermen by Myanmar authorities for illegal fishing near Ranong Province. The detained individuals were identified as Mr. Sunan (68, ship captain), Mr. Sompong (61, mechanic), Mr. Thaworn (64, mechanic), and Mr. Wiroj (69, crew member). They, along with 27 Myanmar crew members, have been handed over to Myanmar’s immigration authorities at Kawthaung. While the Myanmar crew members remain in Kawthaung Prison, the release of the Thai fishermen is delayed due to ongoing investigations and lack of orders from higher authorities.
Thai Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Thanathip Sawangsaeng confirmed that continuous discussions are taking place through the Thai-Myanmar Border Committee (TBC) to expedite the fishermen's return. However, Myanmar's legal process and internal political instability are significant hurdles causing delays.
