On May 26, Mr. Veerith Amrapal, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), revealed that the agency has submitted a plan to utilize part of the government’s 157-billion-baht economic stimulus budget to upgrade rail infrastructure nationwide. The initiative addresses weak spots in Thailand’s rail system, particularly areas prone to subsidence, landslides, and flooding, which pose risks to operational safety.
The proposed projects include strengthening bridge foundations to bear heavier loads, building erosion-resistant retaining walls, constructing drainage systems to prevent flooding, and reinforcing landslide-prone zones. These measures aim to ensure safety and continuity in rail services.
Additionally, the plan features upgrades to railway crossing barriers and signal systems to enhance efficiency and safety.
Initially, SRT has requested a 2-billion-baht allocation to commence these improvements. The request was officially submitted to the Ministry of Transport on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Mr. Veerith added that final budget approval rests with the government, which may adjust priorities or project scopes based on fiscal constraints. SRT remains ready to align its plans with state policies to help drive tangible economic recovery.
