On May 22, the Supreme Administrative Court overturned a lower court ruling and ordered former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to pay ฿10.028 billion in damages related to the government-to-government (G2G) rice pledging scheme.
This follows the Ministry of Finance's appeal against a 2023 ruling that nullified a prior order requiring Yingluck to compensate the state over ฿35.7 billion. The Supreme Court ruled that Yingluck, as Prime Minister and Chair of the National Rice Policy Committee, negligently failed to monitor the rice distribution, which led to massive losses and spoilage. The court found her behavior amounted to gross negligence and held her accountable for 50% of the damages tied to the G2G portion of the scheme.
