On January 1, a violent altercation among inmates broke out at Pattani Central Prison, resulting in one death, 12 injuries, and two individuals in critical condition. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. in the prison's Zone 1. A prisoner was fatally stabbed with a sharp metal object. Prison staff promptly intervened to control the situation and transported the injured inmates to Pattani Hospital for treatment.
The altercation followed a series of recreational activities organized by the prison, including a futsal match on December 31 and a football game on January 1, intended to promote relaxation and physical exercise among inmates. Tensions arising from these games escalated into the violent confrontation.
Authorities have launched disciplinary actions against those involved and notified investigators to proceed with legal action. The prison has also suspended upcoming activities, increased security measures, and pledged to thoroughly investigate the cause of the violence.
The Department of Corrections expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring inmate safety and upholding human rights standards across all correctional facilities.
