As of December 30, immigration authorities reported a surge in international and domestic travel during the New Year holiday period. Police Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyalak, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, revealed that airports nationwide are handling over 150,000 passengers daily, including foreign tourists arriving in Thailand and Thai nationals traveling abroad. The extended five-day holiday, running from December 28, 2024, to January 1, 2025, has significantly boosted travel activity.
International travel among Thai citizens has doubled during the holiday, with outbound passenger numbers reaching 60,000 per day, compared to the usual average of 30,000-40,000. Suvarnabhumi Airport accounts for the majority, handling 25,000 passengers daily, followed by Don Mueang Airport at 10,000. Additionally, many are opting for cross-border travel to Laos via the Bangkok-Apinya Railway station, which connects to Vientiane through two daily round-trip trains.
Inbound tourism is also thriving, with approximately 140,000 arrivals per day, reflecting positive economic recovery trends. This comes as the Thai government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, declares 2025 as the "Year of Tourism." Immigration authorities have increased staffing at border checkpoints and airports to ensure smooth processing for travelers while enhancing safety measures.
Lieutenant General Panumas further noted that immigration personnel are working in coordination with the Royal Thai Police to maintain safety and security during the holidays. National Police Chief Police General Kittirat Phanpetch has directed all units to implement crime prevention strategies, emphasizing the protection of lives and property. These measures aim to deliver a safe and enjoyable holiday experience for citizens and tourists alike as a symbolic New Year's gift from the authorities.
