On December 9, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai addressed concerns raised by Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, over the Pheu Thai Party's proposed Defense Act. Phumtham clarified that the draft law proposed by Pheu Thai MP Prayut Siriphanich is within his rights, but he personally supports the Ministry of Defense's version. He emphasized the importance of gathering diverse opinions before presenting the draft to the Cabinet for review, stressing practicality and collaboration over rigid regulations.

When asked about fears of a potential military coup, stemming from concerns within the Pheu Thai Party, Phumtham dismissed such speculation. He noted that individual opinions, such as those from Prayut Siriphanich and Pheu Thai MP Dr. Cherdchai Tantisirin, do not represent the party’s stance. The Defense Act draft is under detailed review and had previously been evaluated by the Defense Council during the transition between defense ministers. Phumtham reiterated the need for careful scrutiny before it reaches the Cabinet.

Regarding the dynamic between the military, the government, and elite circles, Phumtham stated that while differing perspectives are natural, trust and cooperation remain critical. He emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding the proposed legislation and that open dialogue should guide the process.
