Thai Commerce Minister, Phichai Naripthaphan, recently held discussions with British Ambassador Mark Gooding to explore economic cooperation, trade, and investment opportunities. Key topics included the possibility of establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the UK, aligning with both governments' goals to enhance economic relations.

The meeting, held on December 4, 2024, emphasized collaboration through the Thailand-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). Both sides committed to fostering a supportive business environment and expediting joint initiatives under the Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP). Areas of mutual interest include agriculture, food and beverages, investment, tourism, and healthcare.

A prior Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in September 2024 by Phichai and Douglas Alexander, UK Minister of Trade, to facilitate ongoing cooperation. The second JETCO meeting, scheduled for 2025, will coincide with the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Phichai underscored the significance of a robust trade partnership as a foundation for potential FTA negotiations, which both Thai and UK business sectors support. He also thanked the UK for backing Thailand's bid for OECD membership and reiterated Thailand's commitment to simplifying trade and investment processes, particularly in high-potential industries such as data centers, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals.

During the first 10 months of 2024, the UK ranked as Thailand’s 22nd largest global trading partner and fourth in Europe, with a total trade value of $5.54 billion. Thailand recorded a trade surplus of $1.37 billion, with major exports including processed chicken, machinery, gemstones, motorcycles, and vehicles. Imports from the UK primarily consisted of machinery, electrical components, scientific instruments, beverages, and pharmaceuticals.
