Torpong Selanon, a commissioner of Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), responsible for promoting civil rights and freedoms, stated that he has not yet spoken with his legal advisor Taweewat Saengkaew following reports that ฿12 million in cash was found in a Muang Thong Thani condominium. Taweewat claimed ownership of the money, but the case is still awaiting clarification from police and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). For now, he remains in his advisory position.
“There is no decision to remove him yet. Everything is under investigation. If clear charges are filed, the matter will be reconsidered. Since the NACC has received the case, we must wait for their findings before making any decisions. Everyone deserves fairness,” Torpong said.
NBTC acting secretary-general Trairat Viriyasirikul added that although media reports claimed Taweewat holds multiple subcommittee positions within NBTC, regulations allow a person to serve on no more than three committees. Any exceeding roles may pertain to expired terms or reappointments.
Currently, Taweewat sits on two subcommittees related to the Universal Service Obligation (USO) telecom access projects. A withholding tax document listing his name was also found, but it dates back to 2018.
Advisory positions within NBTC typically receive a monthly salary of ฿80,000 to ฿120,000, with a meeting allowance of ฿8,000.
