On June 9, National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, renowned in the field of visual arts, announced his resignation from the title of National Artist in Visual Arts (Painting), awarded in 2011. The announcement was made during a lecture at the Thailand Biennale, Phuket 2025 international contemporary art event.

Chalermchai stated that his blunt way of speaking might negatively affect the image of a National Artist. He had submitted his resignation letter to the Department of Cultural Promotion, the overseeing agency, last month.

He emphasized that even without the official title, he will continue to serve the country through his artistic contributions according to his personal values.

“I resign today. I don’t want to be a National Artist anymore because it restricts my speech—I can’t criticize the Ministry. I don’t want the Ministry to suffer backlash, so I choose to step down. I don’t need the title to be a true artist of the nation. Let them criticize me. I admit I have a sharp tongue,” Chalermchai said.
