Following Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Thienthong’s recent visit to Monaco, the government has confirmed its intent to pursue hosting a Formula 1 race in Thailand.
Minister Sermsak revealed that the trip was made at the invitation of Formula 1, following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) previously signed. During the visit, the delegation held discussions with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. Although details remain confidential at F1’s request, Sermsak hinted at promising developments for Thailand’s motorsport ambitions.
He noted that the former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had aimed to bring F1 to Thailand by 2027. With the new government now in place, Thailand has reaffirmed its commitment, backed by private sector support, to become a race venue by the 2028 season.
Monaco was selected as a case study due to its renowned street circuit, which closely resembles Bangkok’s urban layout. F1 is reportedly prioritizing street circuits over purpose-built racetracks to better align with commercial goals and attract specific target audiences. Sermsak clarified that Thailand does not plan to build a new F1 circuit due to ongoing maintenance costs and limited year-round use.
The street circuit concept—likely located in central Bangkok—offers the most value, aligning with F1’s current direction and Thailand’s urban landscape. Specific business models and circuit designs will be discussed in further detail as planning progresses.
