On May 27, reporters at the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak Province reported that the Karen National Union (KNU) forces, in coordination with the People's Defense Force (PDF), launched a military operation attacking the Myanmar military base at Thibaw camp in Thibabo Village, Sukari Township, Myawaddy District, Karen State, opposite Mokertai Village, Village No. 1, Waley Subdistrict, Phop Phra District. The attack also affected areas near Muen Ruechai Village in Phop Phra Subdistrict. The anti-Myanmar military forces used drones to drop bombs and also deployed rockets, machine guns, and snipers to strike the camp. In response, the Myanmar military heavily retaliated with mortar fire. The clash caused loud explosions and gunfire near Thai communities.
The conflict resulted in 290 Myanmar nationals fleeing to three temporary safe zones in Phop Phra District, Tak Province:
- Mokertai Temple Safe Zone, Village No. 1, Waley Subdistrict – 232 people.
- Ban Muen Ruechai Temple Safe Zone, Phop Phra Subdistrict – 24 people.
- Ban Muen Ruechai Church Safe Zone, Phop Phra Subdistrict – 34 people.
In terms of border security measures, the Ratchamanu Special Task Force under the Naresuan Force, in cooperation with local authorities, Phop Phra Police, and relevant agencies, is providing humanitarian assistance and maintaining safety. The task force has increased patrols and surveillance, deploying support weapons according to contingency plans to prevent foreign armed intrusions and ensure public safety 24/7.
