The Yannawa District Office has posted on Facebook inviting public opinions regarding the current ban on motorcycles using the Bhumibol Bridges. This initiative, in coordination with Metropolitan Police Division 5, includes an online survey aimed at collecting feedback from all bridge users—motorcyclists, car drivers, and truck operators—on the safety measures and effectiveness of the motorcycle ban.
The Bhumibol 1 and 2 Bridges, also known as the Industrial Ring Road Bridges, connect Bangkok to Samut Prakan. With steep inclines, sharp curves, and heavy traffic from large vehicles, authorities have prohibited motorcycle access for safety reasons. Despite this, some motorcyclists continue to violate the rule, leading to nearly 200 injuries and around 10 fatalities annually—posing risks to themselves and other road users.
The survey seeks to understand public perspectives and explore potential alternatives or improved safety measures. The public has responded actively, with many comments raising concerns and suggestions, such as:
“People are already riding up anyway. Why not legalize it and make a dedicated motorcycle lane for better order?”
“Create a motorcycle lane with barriers. Anyone crossing out of it should face heavy fines.”
“Allow it but make strict rules—during rush hours only, and monitor for reckless youth who might race up there.”
“Even driving a car on that bridge is nerve-wracking. If motorcycles are allowed, they need their own safe lane.”
“Separate lanes are a good idea, but only if riders follow the rules. Without discipline, they shouldn't be allowed.”
“If enforced properly with clear regulations, it could ease traffic. I'd consider switching to my motorcycle during the congested mornings.”
The discussion reflects both safety concerns and practical demands for time-saving transport options. Authorities will use the collected feedback to evaluate policy adjustments and enhance safety management on the bridges.
