Authorities have confirmed that a body found floating in the Mekong River, bound to a concrete pole, is the result of a homicide. The unidentified male victim suffered seven stab and slash wounds of varying sizes. His body was wrapped in a black plastic bag, further covered with blue-white mesh fabric, and tightly bound with rope before being weighed down with a concrete fence post. The body was discovered near the pier at Ban Mai Sai Thong Village, Moo 14, Kud Bong Subdistrict, Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai Province. Initial findings suggest the man had been dead for at least a week.
On May 16, Pol. Col. Surakit Khunkrue, Superintendent of Phon Phisai Police Station, stated that the multiple wounds to the forehead, abdomen, arms, and neck strongly indicate murder. Based on the body’s condition and how it was wrapped, investigators estimate a 90% likelihood of homicide. However, authorities have not yet determined the victim’s identity or nationality.
The body has been sent to Srinagarind Hospital at Khon Kaen University for an autopsy, which will clarify the cause of death, the victim's age, and the time of death. As of now, no missing persons have been reported matching the case.
Police are urging the public in both Thailand and Laos to report any missing family members who may be potential matches. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the investigators at Phon Phisai Police Station directly.
