The Thai national football team narrowly missed out on the ASEAN "Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024" title after losing to Vietnam with an aggregate score of 3-5 over two matches. The decisive game took place at Rajamangala National Stadium on December 5.

Nualphan Lamsam, President of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), acknowledged the defeat as a critical learning experience. She emphasized that every tournament is significant, with fans expecting victories and championships. To better support the national team, she noted the need to adjust match schedules to minimize disruptions, though she admitted this remains a challenging task due to the concurrent importance of the Thai League.

When asked about the future of head coach Masatada Ishii, Nualphan recognized the pressures and limitations he faced during the tournament. Despite the ASEAN Championship loss, she expressed confidence that no major changes to his position would be made, emphasizing that the decision would involve further discussions with team management.

Additionally, Nualphan addressed the rising trend of ASEAN nations recruiting mixed-heritage players or naturalized citizens to strengthen their squads. She revealed that Thailand is also exploring similar strategies by scouting Thai-European players. Notably, Eric Kahl, a Swedish-Thai left-back, has been approached to join the team during FIFA Day matches. Jude Bell is another potential recruit under consideration.

Citing Indonesia's success in World Cup qualifiers with such a model, she highlighted a conversation with Erick Thohir, President of the Indonesian Football Association, about the benefits of integrating players with international experience. Nualphan believes adopting a similar approach could positively impact all levels of Thai football in the future.

The Thai national team’s next challenge will be the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, where Thailand is grouped with Turkmenistan, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka in Group D.
