On December 16, the Thai Election Commission (EC) reviewed findings regarding accusations against Dr. Kasakamon Plaensamai, a member of the Senate (SEN). She has been accused of misleading the public about her qualifications, specifically claiming to have graduated from California University in her application to become a senator. Additionally, she faces allegations of election collusion.
The EC determined that further investigation is needed on certain unclear aspects of the case and has instructed its office to conduct additional inquiries.
Previously, the EC had requested expedited investigations into both allegations—the falsification of educational credentials and election collusion. It was expected that findings would be submitted to the EC by the end of November. If the EC finds Dr. Kasakamon guilty of degree fraud under Section 77(4) of the 2018 Organic Act on the Selection of Senators, penalties include:
- Imprisonment of 1–10 years,
- A fine of 20,000–200,000 baht, or both,
- A 20-year ban from voting or standing for election.
The case would then be submitted to the Supreme Court under Section 62. If the court accepts the case, Dr. Kasakamon would be required to suspend her duties as a senator until a final verdict is issued.
