During a mobile Cabinet meeting at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University on November 29, government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap announced the approval of a flat maximum fare of 20 THB for specific rail services. This policy will apply to the Red Line (Bangkok Apiwat to Taling Chan and Bangkok Apiwat to Rangsit) operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Purple Line (Chalong Ratchatham) operated by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). The reduced fare will be effective from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2025.
The measure is expected to result in revenue losses of approximately 35.35 million THB for the Red Line and 272.99 million THB for the Purple Line. The SRT plans to request government budget allocations to cover its losses, while the MRTA will use income intended for remittance to the treasury for compensation.
