On November 26, 2024, Deputy Bangkok Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam presided over a meeting at the Bangkok City Hall to prepare for the implementation of new waste management fees outlined in a draft ordinance. This ordinance, approved by the Bangkok City Council on October 30, 2024, will take effect 180 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.

The ordinance aims to encourage waste segregation among residents. Households that sort their waste properly will benefit from reduced fees, depending on the amount of waste minimized through segregation. Key details include:

  • Group 1: Residential households producing up to 20 liters of waste daily will pay 20 THB per month if waste is segregated; otherwise, they will be charged 60 THB per month.
  • Group 2: Entities producing 20 liters to 1 cubic meter (or 4 to 200 kilograms) of waste daily will pay 120 THB per 20 liters.
  • Group 3: Entities producing over 1 cubic meter (or 200 kilograms) of waste daily will pay 8,000 THB per cubic meter.

Citizens can register for the program via the BKK WASTE PAY app, district offices, or future online platforms. Registrants must provide proof of proper waste segregation, including photos of separated organic, recyclable, and general waste.

The new system divides fees into collection and disposal charges, with clear incentives for reducing and sorting waste. For instance, Group 1 participants who segregate waste will see their monthly fee drop from 60 THB to 20 THB.

Bangkok authorities will continue to expand registration channels to make the system more accessible, with plans for district officials to assist in registering residents directly at their homes.
