On November 7, Sathorn District Director Thawatchai Paengthai announced the "Yi Peng Muan Jai: Thai-Lanna Loy Krathong" festival, to be held from November 13-15, 2024, along Charoen Krung Road and the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. The event, organized with the Northern Community Association and various local groups, celebrates the King's 72nd birthday and brings the iconic Lanna Yi Peng lantern festival and the Sukhothai Loy Krathong tradition to the city. It will kick off on November 13 at Wat Suthiwararam in Sathorn.
The event aims to showcase the beauty of Thailand’s cultural unity, symbolized by the merging rivers of the north that form the Chao Phraya, reflecting the shared heritage of Thai society. Attendees will experience Lanna lantern displays, traditional Northern food, local arts, and products from across Thailand. Notable highlights include cultural performances, the lighting of lanterns, and vibrant market-style activities inspired by Lanna and international themes.
Sujunya Papakpanichkul, chair of the Yan Nawa Foundation, emphasized that locals are enthusiastic about sharing their traditions with Thai and international visitors, bringing colorful festivities to the riverbanks. The event also aligns with Thailand’s “5F” Soft Power strategy to enhance cultural influence worldwide, encompassing Food, Film, Fashion, Fight (martial arts), and Festivals.
